The Block and Beyond

It's a call to young men and women to stop selling drugs. The block and beyond is an upclose look at the struggles, obstacles and hopes of young men and women ages 14 to 18 who were drawn to sell drugs.

Faced with motivating Cleveland teens participating in a program aimed at turning their lives around, Derrick quickly learned that it's tough to inspire kids who have made fast money on the streets.

The streets made them mentally strong and helped develop characteristics such as finesse, and a toughness that desperately needed to be channeled in a positive way. Derrick captured their attention by giving them respect and reminding them that everyone has a story to share ­ especially them.

Many were eager to participate in this workbook that allows them to share their stories in their own words. Their circumstances vary and so do their answers to the same questions. Most encourage others to stay away from the drug game... but not all of them.
